A shock-absorbing device comprises a resilient annulus 2 made e.g. of rubber having flat, parallel, load-bearing end faces which are bonded to rigid plates 8a, 10 e.g. of metal to form a central chamber 14 which is filled with a flowable damping medium 16 such as asphalt, sand, wax, hydraulic fluid, &c. so that the hysteresis losses of the unit as a whole are enhanced. To facilitate the introduction of the damping medium one of the plates, for instance as shown, the plate 8a is provided with a removable closure 18a protuberances 26, 30, on the closure 18 and the plate 10 respectively, projecting into the chamber 14 in order to guide the flow of damping medium when the annulus is compressed. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), one end of the chamber 14 is closed by a plate 10a which is tapered towards its periphery and is countersunk into part of the upper bearing surface of the annulus. This arrangement lends itself to stacking of several annuli in back-to-back engagement. The plate 8a may be replaced by one similar to the plate 10a and having a removable closure. Modes of stacking annuli are shown. If a plurality of individual chambers 14 is required the intermediate plates 34, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown), can be imperforate or have removable closures fitted therein. A plurality of radiallyspaced chambers may be used instead of the centrally-located single chamber 14.
