[Also in Divisions E2 and G1] Apparatus sensing rotation of a disc 2 comprises friction pads 14 gripping the disc 2 and a detector 22 which detects motion of the pads 14 caused by rotation of the disc 2, makes the pads 14 release their grip and actuates some external device. Applied as a safety device in a vehicle with push - button controlled doors, pushing the opening button energizes twin solenoid coils 5 to make their steel armatures 12 on U- springs 13 move the pads 14 to grip a flange 2 of the vehicle propeller shaft. If the shaft is turning, plates 6 carrying the solenoids rock about a pivot 4 against a return spring 8, within limits set by a stop 25 in a gap 26. A pin 20 on the plates 6 deflects the arm of a micro-switch 22 which de-energizes the solenoids and affects the control of the doors to prevent opening. The controls may be electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic; the solenoids could be replaced by bellows or piston and cylinder units and the micro-switch by a pilot valve. The apparatus may be modified to detect motion in both directions and it can be adapted for a fail-safe system to sense motion in machine tools, cranes and haulage cables and may operate warning bells or lamps as well as safety circuits.
