Abstract

1342718 Braking systems COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 9 July 1971 [5 Aug 1970] 37862/70 Heading F2E A braking system for a vehicle includes a brake shoe, for example, the inner surfaces of the jaws 5, 8 of a clamp; resilient means for applying and fluid actuated means for realeasing the shoe to resist or permit motion of the vehicle respectively, and control means responsive to a sensed tractive force on the vehicle, the control means actuating a valve means to allow the means for applying the brake to operate. The resilient means for applying and fluid actuated releasing means for the brake comprise a pair of springs 14 each mounted in a bore of a part 7 of the clamp and a pair of fluid operated pistons 12 respectively. The invention is described with reference to a mineral mining machine which hauls itself along or is hauled by a flexible chain in which case the tractive effort on the vehicle is sensed by a strain gauge associated with the chain. The vehicle may be driven hydraulically in which case the tractive effort sensing means may comprise a pressure gauge in the hydraulic circuit. In a further embodiment the brake shoe co-operates with the upper suface of a rail (Fig. 7, not shown). The control means may comprise a solenoid operated control valve which controls a servo valve (Fig. 6, not shown).
