Abstract
1,037,464. Stud fastenings; spring clips. CHICAGO UNITED PRODUCTS CO. Inc. July 10, 1964 [July 24, 1963; Jan. 15, 1964 (2)], No. 28686/64. Heading E2B. A method of fastening a member 38 on a supporting surface comprises securing at spaced apart locations on said surface a plurality of headed buttons 22, providing a plurality of adapters 10 each having an aperture adapted to receive the stem of one of said headed buttons, a button seat 26 surrounding each aperture and adapted to abut the undersurface of the head of a said button and each having means for holding said member thereto, mounting one of said adapters on each of said headed buttons whereby a frictional contact is established between each adapter and said supporting surface and fastening said member on said surface by attaching it to said plurality of adapters. The buttons are either welded or adhesively secured to the supporting surface without perforation of the surface and the adapters each comprise a body 12 separated by full depth notches 66 from an integral pilot portion 14; the body 12 has inclined side walls 50 which join substantially parallel side walls 52 the walls 52 being undercut at their bases to provide longitudinal slots 42, 44 which constitute the means for holding the member to the adapter, each slot receiving a flange 34, 36 on the adapter. Flaps are integral with the body 12 and extend outwardly transversely of the body and in use are positioned between the member 38 and the supporting surface 31; before the adapter is positioned on the supporting surface the flaps are disposed at an angle of 45 degrees. The side walls 32 of the pilot portion diverge from the top to the base and also converge to form a blunt nose 40. The upper and lower surfaces of the body 12 and pilot portion 14 have common recesses separated by a diaphragm which provides the button seating 26 within which is the aperture for receiving the button stem. A hole 24 is provided in the diaphragm in the pilot portion and the diameter is greater than that of the head of the button so that the button head can be passed through the hole; the adapter can then be moved longitudinally so that the stem passes through a slot 18 which connects the hole with the aperture to enable the head to engage the seating. On each side of the slot 18 are two camming surfaces 20 which are engaged by the under surface of the head as the adapter is moved to engage the button head with the seating 26, The ends on these camming surfaces form stops 70 which prevent the button head moving off the seating in use. The base of the adapter is provided with two longitudinally extending ribs 28 which abut the surface 31 and when the head of the button is on the seating 26 the ribs are arranged to be in firm frictional contact with the surface 31. In a modification instead of camming surfaces being provided on each side of the slot resilient fingers are provided which define the slot between them and which are connected only at one end to the pilot portion adjacent the hole. The free ends of these fingers form the stops which prevent the button head leaving the seating. The seating and the aperture for the stem are elongated transversely so that the adapter can take up a range of positions on the button to allow for misalignment of the button.
