Abstract

1,035,764. Levitated transport system; electric traction. G. R. POLGREEN. April 3, 1963 [April 4, 1962], No. 12860/62. Heading B7L. [Also in Divisions B8 and H2] A transportation system has a pair of ferromagnetic tracks 11 each having a continuous series of barium ferrite or like ceramic permanent magnets 13, similar magnets 16 being mounted on a vehicle 15 with the lower faces of magnets 16 of the same polarity as the upper faces of magnets 13 so that mutual repulsion occurs, and vehicle propulsion means comprising a source of D.C. 20 connected to one rail 12 of each track, sliding contacts 26 on the vehicle and two conductors 25 electrically connected through contacts 26 and disposed close to magnets 13, so that when a direct current is passed through conductors 25 on closing switch 27 a driving force is produced on the vehicle. The vehicle has several conductors 25 on each side and they are in spaces between magnets 16. The vehicle may be a series of articulated platforms of a conveyer system. The vehicle is brought to rest by opening switch 27 to permit dynamic braking which may be supplemented with friction braking. The magnets 16 each have a mild steel backing plate 21 and is cased in plywood 22. Plywood plates 24 carry the contacts 26 and guide the vehicle. The two conductors 25 may be interconnected by a conductor 28 and switch 29 on the vehicle, the inner contacts 26 being omitted. The propulsion system may be augmented by a linear A.C. motor which is also used for braking. A sheet of aluminium may be laid over the track magnets. In an overhead railway, Fig. 3 (not shown), the vehicle is prevented from leaving the track by physical means or by further permanent magnets producing a downward repulsive effect.
