Abstract

The braking system is for electric suburban railways with track linear motors (5) and inductors (6) on the vehicle. Braking at stations is provided by electromagnetic equipment separate from the motor. There is a strong field across conductor strips (8) on the vehicle. Eddy currents induced in the strips give the braking force. The strips penetrate further into the field for increased vehicle load, so increasing the braking force. The field is given by permanent magnets (7) to prevent risk of brake failure. To re-start the train, the permanent magnets can be moved physically by electromagnets.
