Abstract
1,095,888. Contacting gases with liquids. C. G. MUNTERS. March 23, 1965 [March 24, 1964], No. 12216/65. Heading B1R. [Also in Division F4] Packing in a cross-flow cooling tower in which water is cooled by contact with air, comprises a plurality of identical corrugated sheets 36, 38 mounted vertically in the tower with alternate sheets turned through 180‹ whereby the respective corrugations 40, 42 of adjacent sheets cross one another and form flow passages for the air and water. The corrugations at the air exit side of the packing merge into ribs or eliminators 44, 46 which are inclined upwardly and trap water particles entrained in the air. At the air inlet side of the packing similarly inclined folds 48, 50 serve exclude light thus inhibiting the growth of algae &c. Water spread is assisted by the provision of fine creases 52 in the sheets, along the corrugations. Preferably two groups of packings are disposed within a generally square tower (Fig. 1) receiving water to be cooled via a conduit (32) and sprays (34) located above the packings Cooled water is collected in a pond (18) at the base of the tower.
