Abstract

Waste sulphuric acid containing metal salts is thermally split into SO2 and metal oxides by injecting it into a fluidized solids reactor containing a bed of inert material, for example sand. The acid may first be concentrated by evaporation. The fuel for the fluidized reactor may be partly or wholly waste oil, acid gum, sulphur, pyrites or coal. The SO2 evolved may be reconverted into sulphuric acid. The example relates to decomposition of sulphuric acid containing FeSO4, MgSO4, Al2(SO4)3; there is also reference to waste acids from treatment of ilmenite or Ti slags.
