Abstract

1,032,480. Wrapping-machines; packages. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN. Oct. 21, 1964 [Oct. 22, 1963], No. 42898/64. Heading B8C. Ends 3, 3a (Fig. 1) of a wrapper on a roll 2 are folded inwardly by rods 13 arranged in star formation, and then the folds are secured by discs 16 applied by plates 15. In the embodiment described, the plates 15 are caused to rotate through “ of a turn as they apply discs 16 to the folded ends of the roll, to ensure that the folds are properly flattened. The wrapped roll 2 is placed on a platform 1 which is vertically adjustable to enable the axis of the roll to coincide with the axis XX<SP>1</SP>. Carriages 7, 7a are then moved inwardly from the position shown in the left-hand side of the Figure to the position shown in the right-hand side of the Figure. Each set of pressure rods 13 is moved inwardly under the action of jacks which are activated by the limit switch 9, whose position on the base 6 is adjustable. After the ends of the wrapper have been folded in, the jack 14 is operated to move the plate 15 inwardly. Limit switches 18 operated by the rod of the jack 14 ensure that the rods 13 are moved outwardly before the disc is applied to the end of the package. A helical ramp 17 ensures that the plate 15 rotates as it applies the disc 16 to the folded end of the wrapper. Limit switches 19 control the return of the plates 15 and the return of the carriages 7, 7a to their original positions. Operation of the limit switches 10 by the carriages 7, 7a causes suction devices 22 to transfer an adhesive disc 16 from a pile. to the plate 15. As the suction device 22 withdraws from the plate 15, the adhesive on the disc 16 may be wetted by water-sprayed from part 29 (Fig. 3, not shown) of the suction device 22.
