Abstract

1431747 Carburizing high alloy steels BOEING CO 27 March 1974 [10 April 1973] 13604/74 Headings C7A and C7U To prevent the formation of a low temperature 3, passive metal oxide film on the surface of high alloy steels after cleaning prior to case-hardening, which prevents uniform carburization, the steel is subjected to a high temperature oxidation treatment at at least 1000‹F to form a high temperature oxide, which is not resistant to carburization. Examples of martensitic steels suitable for the process i.e. Vasco 2, modified Vasco +2, modified H11 tool steels and 416 stainless steels are given, and are treated by conventional grit blasting, followed by oxidizing at about 1800 for ¢-4 hours and cooling. The high temperature oxide thus formed is stable and the steel may be left for extended periods prior to case hardening without detriment. The high temperature oxidized steel may be carburized in a conventional manner at 840-1010‹C for 6-30 hours to produce any desired case thickness and subsequently heattreated to optimize its properties.
