Abstract

A flame-retardant composition comprises a thermoplastic polymer and a flame-retarding amount of a compound <FORM:1028158/C3/1> where R, R1 and R2 are hydrogen; saturated alkyl (C1 to C6) radicals; saturated alicyclic (C5 or C6) radicals; cyano, hydroxy, carbamoyl, amino or carboxy substituted alkyl (C1 to C6) radicals or alicyclic (C5 or C6) radicals; aryl (C6 to C10) radicals; aralkyl (C7 to C11) radicals; hydroxy, alkoxy (C1 to C4), halo or polyhalo substituted aralkyl (C7 to C11) or aryl (C6 to C10) radicals or indanyl radicals and X is oxygen or sulphur, not more than one of R, R1 and R2 being hydrogen. The polymers may be vinyl or vinylidene halide polymers; vinyl acetate polymers; polyvinyl butyral; butadiene copolymers; acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene polymers; acrylonitrile, acrylate and methacrylate polymers; polymers of esters; polymers of vinyl cyclic compounds and polymers of unsaturated ethers, amides, ketones and alcohols. In the examples, the polymers employed are polyethylene; polypropylene; polymethylmethacrylate; methylmethacrylate, styrene, acrylonitrile copolymer; a mixture of a butadieneacrylonitrile copolymer and an acrylonitrilestyrene copolymer. Numerous phosphine oxides and sulphides are used.
