[Also in Division B4] A tool for radially compressing a deformable circular locking ring over or into a shaft comprises a housing, a collet as at 10 (Fig. 1) or 34 (Fig. 5) mounted in the housing, the collet having fingers 12 or 36, the free ends of which are adapted to apply radial force sufficient to deform a locking ring mounted thereon and manually operable actuating means for sliding a sleeve as at 16 (Fig. 1) or rod as at 42 (Fig. 5) from a normal unactuated position towards the free ends of the collet fingers to swing them radially in the direction to effect the radial deformation. The collet sleeve 16 (Fig. 1), is fastened at its rear end to a driving head 17 and is spring biased to a position spaced rearwardly along the collet 10. The sleeve 16 is moved slidably over the collet to move the fingers 12 radially inwardly to force the locking ring into the groove in a shaft inserted in the collet. The tool is manually operated by a pivoted trigger 24. In a modification, Figs. 6-8 (not shown), the tool is pneumatically operated. In another modification, Figs. 11-16 (not shown), the tool has a magazine of locking rings disposed in the collet, teeth being provided on the collet and interposed between the fingers to retain the locking rings therein. An air operated magazine, Fig. 7 (not shown) is described. In the tool, Fig. 5, for radially expanding a locking ring into a groove in a hollow shaft, the locking ring is disposed in the groove 38 on the collet, the tool being manually operated by a trigger 51 which causes a rod 42 disposed in the collet to slide to the left and the collet fingers 36 to swing outwardly to expand the ring. In a further modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), a tool for radially expanding locking rings is airoperated.
