Abstract

1346166 Socket wrenches LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc 15 Jan 1973 [20 Sept 1972] 2105/73 Heading B3W A torque applying wrench has a driving element with an extension 14 for detachable locking engagement with a driven element, such as a socket, the driving element has a handactuable detent mechanism comprising an actuating element 32, Figs. 1 and 2, in the form of an elongate spring, and a detent element 16, the spring is movable to apply a camming force to the detent element to retract, it, also the spring allows the detent member to be retracted by a force thereon, the force not being exerted by the spring. The spring engages in an oblique slot in the detent element such that downward pressure on button 18 and thus sleeve 22 and leaf spring 32 causes the detent member to be moved inwardly. During this operation the lower end of the spring 34 pivots about protrusion 26 and due to its short length is rigid. If a socket is removed from the extension manually then the spring pivots about protrusion 28 which due to the length of spring involved is flexible. The embodiment of Fig. 4 operates similarly although spring 32 is replaced by rod spring 52.
