Abstract

998,896. Cartridge-actuated fastener driving tools. P. TERMET. June 26, 1961 [June 29. 1960], No. 22977/61. Heading B4C. In a cartridge-actuated stud driving tool of the piston type, a muzzle 23, Fig. 1, is mounted on the barrel 19 by a pin and slot connection 28, 29 so as to be movable axially thereof under the force of the piston 21, 21b, and at the end of the movement to retain the piston in the tool through the abutting engagement of complementary conical surfaces 22, 21c provided on the muzzle and the piston. The forward movement of the muzzle also provides an opening for escape of the explosive gases. A progressive braking action is provided by the embodiment shown in Fig. 6 in which the muzzle 23 is provided internally with a conically-shaped ring 46 of elastic material together with a metallic ring 47 and a movable sleeve 48, the ring 47 being formed with a conical shoulder 22. Magnets 30, Fig. 1, on the muzzle hold fastening washers &c. in a recess 32 and either magnets 24 or spring-pressed balls serve to hold the stud 27 in position before firing. The firing mechanism comprises a firing pin 7 and a spring-urged hammer 10 cocked manually and held in the cocked position by a spring- urged plunger 11 controlled by a lever 13, Fig. 3 (not shown).
