Abstract

Vibration-dampers.-A device for damping the oscillations of rotating shafts comprises adjustable friction means which resists displacement of the shaft while allowing free rotation. The Figure shows part of a flange coupling a for connecting a shaft b to a steam-turbine shaft. The shaft b carries a disk c which can rotate freely between series of balls d, e bearing on races f, g. The ball races have spherical outer surfaces bearing against flanges h, i of a hollow piston k, the flange i being removable. The piston k is arranged inside a cylinder l, and movement is resisted by the friction of packing m of leather &c. adjusted by a sleeve n and screwed plug o. Oil is introduced through a channel p, and escapes at q. Relative axial movement of the disk c is prevented during rotation by centrifugal action on the balls d, e. The friction device may be arranged radially, and movement transmitted by a bell-crank lever, and the friction surface may be plane or of other non-cylindrical shape.
