Abstract
1,024,828. Travelling-wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. May 14, 1963, No. 19044/63. Heading H1D. An arrangement for coupling a slow-wave structure 1 to a waveguide 11 of higher impedance comprises a straight section 10 of hollow waveguide whose cross-section decreases smoothly along its length, a curved portion 28 of waveguide smoothly continuous with the smaller end of the straight section and shortcircuited at its distant end 30, and a straight waveguide probe 14 connected to or forming part of the slow-wave structure, projecting transversely therefrom through an aperture 16 in the wall of the curved portion, across the waveguide, and joined to the opposite waveguide wall, the arrangement being such that the straight section of hollow waveguide projects transversely to the slow-wave structure. The slow-wave structure preferably comprises a grating formed by a plurality of parallel conductive bars 24 extending between metal side walls 2, 3 each adjacent pair of bars being connected by conductive strips 5, 6, and a conductive ridge 7 may extend close to the plane of the structure. The waveguide feeder is preferably rectangular, having a constant dimension in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the slow-wave structure.
