Abstract

1,024,672. Fuel injection pumps. LEYLAND MOTORS Ltd. Dec. 17, 1962, No. 47606/62. Heading F1A. In a fuel injection pump of the type described in Specification 953,314 the cam member 40 is mounted on a piston 42 slidable in the casing 10 under the control of a governor valve 68 to vary the extent of travel of the pumping head 28 and plunger 24 with the valve closed. The valve 68 controls the pressure in the piston chamber 43 in accordance with the pressure from the feed pump 12, which pressure varies in accordance with speed and the setting of a control spindle 72 which by means of a flat 71 controls passages connecting the feed pump outlet to the interior of the pump casing 10 connected through a restricted passage 80 to the inlet of pump 12. The pressure acting on the valve 68 is by-passed in the event of excessive movement of the piston 42 by means of a spindle 92, having a by-passing flute 94, connected through a bell-crank lever to the piston 42. The cam follower rings 42, 52 are angularly adjustable by means of a piston subjected to the feed pump outlet pressure to vary the timing of injection. A draw-back type outlet valve 29 is fitted and the outlet is successively directed to outlets 20 by means of a groove 36 in the plungerrotor 24. A shaft 98 which pre-sets the position of the piston 42 may be used to stop the engine. The pressure wave due to the opening of the valve 24, 28 is dissipated in the flutes of the spindle 26 by leakage before the parts 64, 65 align.
