Abstract

1,024,269. Wells, etc.; submerged tanks. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Sept. 16, 1964 [Sept. 18, 1963], No. 37850/64. Headings E1F and E1H. [Also in Division B3] Operations are carried out on an underwater installation from a platform above the surface of the water by an underwater manipulator which engages one or more flexible guides extending from the platform to the installation at a point laterally offset from the centre line of the installation. The installation may be storage tanks or production or drilling wellheads. The manipulator 35 which is generally in accordance with Specification 920,309 is also used to secure the guides 62, 63 to posts 55, 56 (Fig. 4, not shown) at a production wellhead. The manipulator has an extensible arm 42 vertically adjustable relative to the body of the manipulator and carrying a wrench head, boring tool, milling tool, clamping arm or pipe connecting device. The arm may be actuated with the manipulator supported from the platform 11 or resting on tracks 32, 32a, members 70, 71 being disconnected from the guides if it is desired to run the manipulator on the tracks about the wellhead.
