Abstract

1,150,671. Wells &c. GRAY TOOL CO. 9 Jan., 1967 [18 Feb., 1966], No. 1188/67. Heading E1F. A tubular part used in completing a well carries a contracted split support ring which is permitted to expand into engagement with a supporting member. The tubular part is a Hanger 30 which is interposed in a casing string 28. The string is lowered into the supporting member which is a casing 10 so that a pawl 98 is carried below a trip groove 14 in the casing. The string is raised so that the pawl extends into the trip groove and further upward movement of the string removes pins 78 connected to the pawl from sockets 82 in the ends of support ring 50 which then tends to expand. Continued upward movement of the string cause a cover plate 102 to cam the pawl inwardly so that the string may be raised to carry the support ring above a latching groove 12 in the casing. If the string is lowered the support ring snaps into the latching groove and further lowering of the string causes the hanger to expand the support ring further into the latching groove until the weight on the hanger is transferred to the support ring which in turn transfers the weight to the casing. The trip and latching grooves may be formed in the bore of a hanger engaging the conductor pipe of a sub-aqueous well completed above the water level, and a hanger having a support ring engaging the latching groove may have its bore formed with latching and trip grooves for a further hanger. The casing strings above the hangers may have screw joints which permit removal of the well completion above the mud line so that the well may be capped and its position indicated by a buoy. A casing string may be supported by a series of hangers according to the invention and spaced along the length of the string.
