Abstract
The surface of a polystyrene article is treated by sulphonating and/or chlorosulphonating the article by dipping into the aliphatic hydrocarbon layer of a bath, formed from an aliphatic hydrocarbon (which is sufficiently free from aromatic hydrocarbons so as to have no solvent action on the article) disposed in a layer above chlorosulphonic acid so that a small quantity of the acid is dissolved in the hydrocarbon, and then subjecting the article to an ion exchange treatment to replace the hydrogen atoms in the sulphonated and/or chlorosulphonated surface by metallic atoms. The hydrocarbon may be a hexane or n-heptane. The article may be cleaned by rinsing it in an aliphatic hydrocarbon prior to its treatment or it may be rinsed prior to the ion exchange treatment and dried. The ion exchange treatment may be carried out with an aq. solution of sodium chloride or hydroxide or nickel chloride. The article may be annealed prior to its treatment.
