Abstract

1,022,128. Reinforced adhesive tapes. L. H. OGNEN. April 18, 1963 [April 18, 1962], No. 15356/63. Heading B2E. [Also in Division D1] A reinforced adhesive tape is produced (as shown in Fig. 3) by introducing threads 5 into a thermoplastic material by passing the threads between two heated cylinders 7, 8 rotating in opposite directions at different speeds while at the same time the thermoplastic material e.g. in the form of grains or powder, from receptacle 9, is supplied to the cylinders so that they produce a tape, whereafter the reinforced tape so formed, after passage between cooling cylinders 11 and 12, has a layer of pressure sensitive adhesive from distributer 13, applied to one of its faces. The temperatures of the cylinders 7, 8 may be the same or different. The threads 4, Fig. 2, may be twisted or untwisted and be formed of cotton, flax, jute, hemp, sisal or other natural fibres, or of artificial materials such as acetate, viscose or glass, or of synthetic materials such as polyamide or super polyamide, polyacrylonitrile, and polyester, trade names and marks being specified. The thermoplastic material of base element or support 2, Fig. 2, may be polyvinyl alcohol, acetate or chloride, a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copclymer, polyethylene, polyamide, polyester e.g. a polyester of terephthalic acid, regenerated cellulose or a cellulose derivative such as ethyl cellulose, cellulose butyrate or acetate. The adhesive 3, Fig. 2, may be a mixture of elastomeric polyisobutylene (with or without rubber additive) and a sticky resin e.g. a hydrogenated coumarone-indene resin.
