Abstract

1,020,369. Reciprocating conveyers. DAVEY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Feb. 14. 1964 [Feb. 14, 1963], No. 6004/63. Heading B8A. [Also in Division B3] A method of controlling the cooling of hot elongate bodies, such as rolled beams, comprises transferring the bodies successively to two cooling beds, the bodies being differently spaced on the two beds. Rolled bars from a roller table 11, Fig. 1, are moved by shifters 13 on to a cooling bed A, where they are traversed by walking beams 16. They are then transferred by shifters 17 to a second cooling bed B, again having walking beams 16, and are finally moved on to a runout table 20. Each shifter 13 (Fig. 5, not shown) is actuated by a rope wound round drums 25 and 26, the rope being attached to a slider plate housing a pivoted latch, the latch being extended during forward movement of the plate, in order to engage a beam to be moved, but being retracted during the return movement. The shifters 17 are similar to the shifters 13 but are each moved by a hydraulically actuated lever arm. Alternatively latches attached to the walking beams 16 may be used. The bars are traversed across the cooling beds by walking beams 16 (Fig. 4, not shown) which are first raised by pivoted hydraulically operated arms 50 to lift the bars clear of fixed supporting skids 15 and are then moved horizontally an appropriate distance by a piston operated arm 56 before being lowered again on to the skids 15. Each shifter 18 (Fig. 2, not shown) for moving a bar 68 on to the runout roller table 20 comprises a chair 21 slidably mounted on a frame 22 which is, in turn, slidably mounted on a track 23. The chair 21, which includes a substantially vertical surface 81 and a substantially horizontal surface 80 of adjustable length, is raised by a piston 34, operating through levers 29 and 28, to lift the track 23. Then a pulley mounted rope 24 traverses the chair to allow the bar to be deposited on the table 20. The bar 68 is first moved into position above the chair 21 by a latch 85 mounted on the frame 22, the latch engaging the bar as the frame is moved to the right. Any bending of a bar along its longitudinal axis is accommodated by each chair being slidable in its respective frame. The operating shafts connecting the transfer mechanism and the walking beams may be provided with disengageable couplings 26B.
