Apparatus for producing a tobacco filler stream Fs (Fig. 2) comprises a conveyer 7 for tobacco and a moving pressure-loaded presser surface 6 facing the support surface of the tobacco stream of the conveyer, which consists of a yieldable material and extends over a substantial length of the conveyer to a point in advance of a trimming device 8 for removing tobacco from the surface of the stream. Tobacco is showered on to belt 2 moving at a speed greater than the peripheral speed of the conveyer wheel 7 and fed to a groove 11 in the wheel where it is supported by the belt 6, the pressure of which is controlled by adjustment of a weight 18 mounted on an arm 16 pivoted at one end and carrying a roller 15 at the other end over which the belt 6 travels (Fig. 3). The filler is then trimmed and fed to rod forming mechanism. The belt 6 may be applied around part only of the length of the periphery of the wheel 7 which carries the stream, suction being applied at those parts of the wheel where the duct 11 is open. The belt 6 may be slightly narrower than the width of the groove 11 (Fig. 4, not shown), may be slightly wider with reinforced edges so that the edges rest on the edges of the groove while the middle of the belt conforms to the thickness of tobacco in the groove (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown), or the belt may have a layer of foamed material attached thereto (Figs. 10-12, not shown) or be in the form of an air-filled tube (Figs. 13 and 15, not shown). The belt may be engaged by a series of presser springs (Fig. 17, not shown) or may pass through a chamber to which air pressure is applied (Fig. 19, not shown). In the latter case the air pressure may be controlled by a valve which is automatically adjusted in response to a signal from a checking or testing station. If it is desired to produce dense end cigarettes, a lugged belt may be positioned between the belt 6 and the trimming mechanism for compressing repeated short sections of the filler stream (Fig. 20, not shown).
