972,658. Cigarette-making machines. AMF-SASIB S.p.A. Feb. 7, 1963 [Feb. 9, 1962], No. 5085/63. Heading A2C. A method of axially spacing cigarettes or filter-tips moving axially in succession and in endto-end abutting relation comprises applying to the leading cigarette or filter-tip of the succession an air stream moving in its direction of movement at a higher linear speed than that of the cigarette or filter-tip thereby to accelerate its speed in relation to that of the succession of cigarette or filter-tips. As shown abutting cigarettes S issuing from a continuous rod machine are passed into a guide tube 3 which opens at 103 into a converging annular nozzle 4 into which compressed air is fed through a pipe 5 provided with a regulating valve 6. Spaced from the tube 3 is a barrel 7 mounted on the end of the nozzle 4 which leads the cigarettes into the flutes of a collecting drum 8. The amount by which each cigarette is accelerated by the jet of air from nozzle 4 may be varied by adjusting the valve 6 or by variation of the distance between the tube 3 and the barrel 7.
