Abstract
A uranium based alloy, suitable for use as a nuclear reactor fuel, comprises 100-1500 p.p.m. of aluminium and one or more of Cr, Mo, Rh, Re, Ir, Os, Ru, Ni, Co, Si, Nb, Pt, W, V and Mn in an amount sufficient to produce a grain size not greater than 0.5 mm. but insufficient to cause an increase in neutron absorbing properties of more than 0.1%, the balance, apart from incidental impurities such as carbon, being uranium. The alloy is quenched (e.g. by water) from a temperature in the b phase region (e.g. 720 DEG C.) and annealed at a temperature in the a phase region (e.g. 500 DEG C.).
