Abstract

A wooden, rubber, or plastics coffin is constructed by assembling in superimposed relation a number of rectangular frame units each consisting of four interconnected slats 1 of "T" section rebated at their two ends on the upper and lower sides respectively so that flush fitting laps joints are formed at the corners, the separate units and adjacent walls being secured by vertical bolts adjustable in length to facilitate the construction of containers of various depths. Horizontal partitions may be fitted into the corrugated surface of the wall which results from the "T" section and vertical partitions may be located in grooves formed in the inner edges of the slats. In a modification, the slats may be held in spaced relation by tubes p placed on the bolts. In a further modification the units are hollow and are of an extruded plastic, wooden plugs are fitted at the lapped ends to accommodate the bolts and a rib on the underside and a co-operating groove on the top respectively of each unit are provided to increase rigidity. Lid and base panels are held in recesses in the side walls; these panels may themselves be formed of a number of adjacently disposed strips. A metal sleeve lining the holes in the lapped ends of two adjacent slats may be provided and the holes in the slats may be elongated or may extend to the end faces of the slats to assist assembly. The crates may be lined with rubber or felt.
