Another object is to, provide a box of the character described with a cell-forming filler in which a central transverse partition of the filler serves as a carrying handle for the box, said transverse partition having a, hand grip opening in, the upper section and having reinforcing elements extending from its upper edge downwardly to strengthen the partition on either side of the hand grip opening.

The above and other objects and characteristic features of this invention will be more readily understood from the following detailed description takenin connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. '1 is a plan view of a box employing my invention.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, my improved box comprises side walls. 5. end walls 6,and a bottom wall 1 Each of th side and 'end' walls consists of a single panel of wood veneer having component plies P adhesively secured together by any suitable waterproof adhesive. The bottom wall I is here shown as being the slatted type comprising spaced slats la which may be either of solid wood or wood veneer adhesively secured together by waterproof adhesive.

A plurality of cleats, comprising horizontally extending top and bottom cleats 8 and 9 and vertically extending side cleats I 0, are secured to the outer side of each end wall panel 6. These cleats are arranged in rectangular arrangement to lie flush with the edges of panel 6.

This box is shown fitted with a cell forming filler [-8 consisting of longitudinally extending partitions l9 suitably interlocked with transversely extending partitions 20 and El. Each of the partitions I9 and 20 consistsof a strip of plywood veneer but maybe of any suitable lightweight material such as athin strip of solid wood. Partition 2| is here shown to besolid wood of asubstantial thickness and is located centrally of the box. In the preferred construction, partition 2] is in two sections, the lower section being designated 22 and the upper section being designated 23. r l

Partitions I9, 20 and the lower section 22 of partition 2| are respectively provided with slotted portions l9a, 20a and 21a, so that in the assembled relation of the partitions as shown, the upper and lower edges of the longitudinally extending partition's l 9 are elevated above the corresponding edges of transverse partitions 29. The lower edge 2 lb of section 22 of partition 2| is arranged to" lie flushvvith thellower edges of transversepartitions 20 and the upper edge Me of this partition is arranged to lie flush with the upper edges of longitudinally extending partitions l9. This arrangement of the partition section 22 assures direct support of partition 2| along its lower edge 2| b on the bottom wall 1 of the box. Similarly, if it is desired to invert the filler in the box, the partition 2| is supported along its edge 2| 0 on the bottom wall of the box.

As shown in the drawings, the upper section 23 of partition 2! is supported along its lower edge by the upper edge 2| 0 of lower section 22 and has its upper edge substantially flush with the upper edges of the opposing side walls 5 of the box. The partition 2! is secured along its side edges to the opposing Side walls 5 by fastening elements 24 and is provided with a hand opening 25 located a convenient distance below the upper edge of the partition to permit lifting of the box by the partition 2|.

The upper section of partition 2| is strength- 3 ened in the vicinity of inforcing elements 21 which extend downwardly a substantial distance from the upper edge of the partition adjacent either end of the hand opening. The reinforcing elements here shown comprise elongated spikes which are driven into the wood from the top of the partition, and penetrate the wood for a substantial distance below the hand opening. The reinforcing element may comprise any suitable elements which would conveniently strengthen the upper section of the partition at either ends of the hand opening against splitting of the wood through the hand Opening section thereof which may have become weakened in providing the hand opening. For example, wooden pins may be inserted in suitable vertical recesses in the partition or the reinforcing elements may be placed externally from the top of the partition for a substantial distance along either surface of the partition adjacent the ends of the hand opening.

By reason of the fact that the slotted portions Zia of partition section 22, as here shown, extend from the upper edge Zlc downwardly, it is necessary to divide the partition into separable upper and lower sections. However, when the filler is inverted the slots Zia are likewise inverted. In this case partition 2| may constitute separate upper and lower sections or may constitute a single panel partition, the lower portion of which is suitably slotted to interlock with the slotted portions of the longitudinally extending partitions l9.

Having thus described what is now considered to be the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be readily understood that various modifications may be resorted to without departing from the scope and spirit of my invention as defined by the appended claim,

In a box of the character described, including side, end and bottom walls, and a cell formin filler formed by a plurality of relatively thin longitudinally and transversely extending partitions, each of said partitions being provided with co-operating elongated slots adapted to receive substantial portions of the other in interlocking engagement with each other, said transverse partitions having lower marginal portions projecting downwardly a substantial distance below the lower marginal edges of the longitudinal partitions, and said longitudinal partitions having upper marginal portions projecting upwardly a substantial distance above the upper marginal edges of the said transverse partitions, and terthe hand opening by reminating a substantial distance below the upper marginal edges of said box, a relatively thick, continuous partition wall arranged centrally and transversely of said box intermediate two of said thin transverse partitions, said continuous Wall including a lower panel section provided with elongated slots adapted'to receive slotted portions of said longitudinally extending partitions in interlocking engagement with each other, said lower panel section having its lower marginal edge lying in a common horizontal plane with the lower marginal edges of said thin transversely extending partitions and being directly supported by the bottom wall of said box and having its upper marginal edge lying in a common horizontal plane with the upper marginal edge of said longitudinally extending partitions, and a separable upper panel section directly supported along its lower edge by the upper edge of said lower panel section, securing means extending through the side walls of said box and into the side edges of said upper panel section to retain the latter and the underlying lower panel section against vertical displacement, said upper panel section being provided with a hand grip opening suitably spaced below the upper edge thereof to define an integrally moulded hand grip between said opening and the upper edge of the panel, and reinforcing elements in the upper panel sec tion at opposite ends of said hand grip opening, said reinforcing elements extending downwardly through the upper edge thereof and terminating a substantial distance below the horizontal plane of the lower defining wall of said opening to reinforce the areas of the panel on either side of the hand opening which have been weakened as a result of the provision of said hand opening.
