Abstract
1,013,360. Jointing by stamping. AMP Inc. June 19, 1964 [June 21, 1963], No. 25388/64. Heading B3Q. [Also in Division F3] A method of compressing a workpiece comprises vaporizing an electrical conductor 52 by an electric current, and utilizing the energy thus generated to compress the work. As applied to a portable or (as shown), bench tool for crimping electrical connectors C on to conductors by a movable die 12, this is operated by a piston 22 in a polyethylene cartridge case 42. The filament 52, in an air or water-filled chamber, is connected between electrodes 50, 54 in the cartridge-head 46 and a polyethylene plug 58. The electrode 50 bears on an insulated disc 38 contacting the central conductor 34 of a socket, the outer conductor 28 of which is connected, through sleeves 18, 26 and the piston 22, to the electrode 54. A plug 64 connects the filament to a pulse-forming network through which a condenser is discharged to vaporize the filament and drive the plug 58 and piston 22. The tool may be modified to drive a wedge into a cable clamp to receive a cable or cables, as described in Specification 959,884.
