Abstract

1,012,574. Metal-vapour lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 29, 1963 [May 2, 1962], No. 16723/63. Heading H1D. A high-pressure mercury discharge lamp has a filling of mercury, rare gas, and a metal iodide, in a closed discharge vessel mounted within an envelope which transmits at least 50% of the desired radiation produced by the discharge and reflects at least 50% of the infra-red radiation, the power supplied to the discharge vessel during normal operation being so high that the resonance radiation of the metal of the metal iodide is emitted. The silica discharge vessel 1 having electrodes 2 and 3 is mounted within the evacuated glass envelope 6 having an internal layer 8 of tin oxide of resistance between 10 and 100 ohms per square, and a getter 7 to maintain the vacuum. The filling may include mercury, a rare gas, and the iodide of mercury, sodium, indium, thallium, gallium, nickel, or cobalt, and excess iodine may be present. The infra-red reflective coating may not cover the whole envelope, provided it reflects at least 50% of all the infrared impinging upon the whole envelope.
