Abstract
1305065 Metal-vapour lamps PATENTTREUHAND - GESSELLSCHAFT FUR ELEKTRISCHE GLUHLAMPEN mbH 11 May 1970 [20 May 1969 18 Nov 1969] 22716/70 Heading H1D In a high pressure discharge lamp comprising an arc tube 1 of quartz glass enclosed in a double-ended cylindrical outer envelope 9 of quartz glass or of a material having a thermal resistance similar to that of quartz glass, the wall load of the arc tube 1 is 10 w./cm.<SP>2</SP> and the ratio of the inner diameter of the outer envelope 9 to the outer diameter of the arc tube 1 is from 3:1 to 1À05:1. The arc tube 1 has radiantheat reflecting coatings 6 of ZrO 2 and lead-in wires 4, 5 connected to Ni or Mo discs 7 having supports 8 engaging the outer envelope 9 and connected by conductors 10 and 11 to foils in I-section pinches 12 and 13 secured in ceramic bases 14 and 15. The fitting may be 20 mg. of Hg, 2À5 mg. of Dy, 10 mg. of HgI, 5À5 mg. of T1I and 30 torr of A. Outer envelope 9 which contains a getter 16 is either evacuated or filled with N 2 or A at 700 torr cold pressure. The inner wall surface of the outer envelope may have a coating of tin oxide to absorb IR radiation, or an IR absorbing material may be included in the material of the envelope. TiO 2 may also be provided as a coating or as an additive to the filling to absorb short wave UV radiation and thus prevent the formation of ozone. One lead 10 or 11 may be taken through the side wall to reduce the length of the lamp. An alternative form of lamp (Fig. 3, not shown) has a filling of sodium, mercury and a starting gas such as Xe or A.
