[Also in Division F2] A chain consists of links as in Fig. 4, alternating with links as in Fig. 7, each link consisting of a main plate 11 secured to an auxiliary plate 10 and successive links being joined by pivot-pins with the auxiliary plates in one plane, the main plates of alternate links on one side of this plane and the main plates of the intermediate links on the other side thereof. In each auxiliary plate the distance between the front and rear surfaces 19, 18 of the extension portion 15 and the distance between the semi-circular forward end and the plane rear end of the body portion are each equal to the pitch of the chain. Figs. 1 and 2 depict a duplex chain of the above kind mounted in a sprocket block within which it runs within a guide 44 over a drive sprocket 35. The emerging portion 1 of straight chain carries a loadengaging terminal link 55 and the interengagement of successive auxiliary plates enables this chain portion to act over a supporting surface 56 in the manner of a rigid strut. The chain may be equipped with a hook and slot locking means 124, 121, Fig. 19, to impart extra rigidity to the straight chain portion. In this form, the sprocket block includes a cam surface 131 to ensure engagement of the locking means as the chain leaves the block. In Fig. 12, the construction is generally similar to Fig. 19 but, in order to provide for both ends of the chain to emerge horizontally from the sprocket block, the chain guide is of U-form and there is a cam 131 and 132 respectively, in each limb of the guide instead of the single cam 131 in Fig. 19. The complete devices of Figs. 12 and 19 are part of the present invention, but the corresponding device of Fig. 1 forms the subject-matter of Specification 1,010,464.
