Abstract
Soda-lime glass articles are strengthened by treating with a potassium salt at a temperature of at least 875 DEG F., and preferably between 900 DEG and 1100 DEG F. and then cooling, preferably to below 300 DEG F., before the strengthening effect is dissipated. The glass may be preheated to treatment temperature and is then immersed in a bath of the molten salt, preferably the nitrate, and the glass, on withdrawal with a film remaining thereon, can be maintained for a time at a temperature sufficiently high to permit the action to continue. Specification 819,179 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 917,388 and 966,733.
