Abstract
1,009,987. Electron beam apparatus. D. SCIAKY. April 11, 1962 [May 12, 1961], No. 13938/62. Heading H1D. An electron beam gun, e.g. for welding metals having a high melting temperature within an evacuated enclosure, comprises a body portion 20 of insulating material, a cylindrical cage 26 depending from the body portion, a pair of current conducting electrodes 22, 24 extending longitudinally within the cage and being supported from the body portion, a clamping device 45, 46, 51, 53 carried by each of the electrodes for releasably clamping an electron emitting element 25 to the electrodes at their depending terminal end, the clamping device including a clamping bar 45 and a member 51 for spring loading the bar and a focusing electrode 27 releasably secured to the depending terminal end of the cage and positioned for coacting relation with the electron emitting element. An outer cylindrical cage 28 concentric with inner cage 26 supports an anode 30. The beam is focused on to the workpiece by a pair of coils 84, 85. A conical shaped shield 94, Fig. 4 (not shown), absorbs X-rays and acts as an ion-collector. The anode-focusing electrode distance may be altered by positioning a spacing ring 73, Fig. (not shown), between the cage 28 and insulating support 70, the structure being held in position by a releasable knob 78. The electron emitting element 25 is of the form described in Specification 1,009,986.
