Abstract

1,007,544. Grinding drills. A. E. ALSTROM. May 21, 1963 [May 24, 1962], No. 20074/63. Heading B3D. Apparatus for grinding drills comprises a clamp 8 for securing the apparatus on a drill 2, which may be clamped in the chuck of a drilling machine, a casing 3 adapted to be held against rotation by hand, and devices 23, 24 drivingly connected between the casing and the clamp for rotating two grinding discs 18 held in contact with the end of the drill. Each grinding disc is mounted on a shaft 21 rotatable in a bearing 17 and having a bevel gear 22 engaging a further bevel gear 23 on a shaft 25. A second gear 24 on each shaft engages an internally toothed ring 26 on the casing 3 which is adapted to be held by hand during a grinding operation and rotatably supports the end 28 and tubular part 6 of a member 4 carrying the shafts 25 and bearing 17. The part 6 receives a sleeve 5 which is restricted to axial movement relative to the part 6 by a screw 30 engaging a slot 29 and is connected to a clamp 8 having centering means 7 and a pair of spring-pressed plungers 14, 15 for engaging the flutes of the drill. In operation, the apparatus is placed axially on the drill with the plungers 14, 15 engaging the flutes and the casing 3 held by hand while the drill is rotated, the movement of the gears 24 around the inside of the gear 26 imparting rotation to the grinding discs 18, 19 which are moved into engagement with the end of the drill by axial movement of the casing and part 6 on the sleeve 5 against a spring 31. The apparatus may have a crank 36 fitted on the end 28 of the part 4 so that a drill not fitted in a drilling machine can be rotated and the grinding discs 18, 19 rotated in contact with the end of the drill.
