Abstract
1,007,512. Milling. H. DECKEL and F. W. DECKEL,. May 1, 1963 [May 30, 1962], No. 17095/63. Heading B3K. [Also in Division F2] In a backlash-free drive for a milling machine carriage 18, a feed screw 10 is rotatably mounted in a saddle bed 12 and is driven through worm 14 and worm-wheel 16, two nuts 20, 22 and recirculating balls are mounted within the carriage 18, the nut 20 being rigidly connected thereto and the nut 22 being rotatably mounted therein, and the nut 22 is adapted to be rotated with respect to nut 20, in order to eliminate backlash, by means of an axially spring-pressed bush 36 having inclined non-self-locking flanks 32 engaging matching flanks 30 on a sleeve 28 rigidly secured to the nut 22. The bush 36 is axially guided by a pin 34 engaging a slot 40 and is urged axially by spring washers 38. In a modification, shown in Fig. 3, an acme thread is provided on the spindle 10 and nuts and means for cancelling the spring force operative between the nuts 20 and 22 comprises a ring screw 44 which can be turned by a handle 42 to move pins 46 and bush 36 axially against the force of springs 38. In a further modification, shown in Fig. 4, nuts 20, 22 are connected by gears 58, 64, 60 and 66 and roller-type freewheel couplings 68, 70, of opposite hand, to a driving shaft 62.
