A door catch of the kind which includes a magnetic element and a keeper element each adapted for attachment either to the door or to the door jamb and so arranged that when secured one to each of these parts the magnetic element and the keeper element can come into contact with one another and thus secure the door releasably in the desired position is characterised in that the magnetic element includes a permanent magnet 14 and a pair of ferromagnetic pole pieces 16 in contact with the magnet, the magnet and pole pieces being disposed inside a casing 12 and adapted for limited pivotal movement with respect to the casing about an axis, which is parallel to the plane containing the keeper-engaging faces of the pole pieces, the arrangement being such that on engagement with, or the approach of, the keeper element the pivotal movement of the magnet and pole pieces can take place so as to ensure good gripping contact between the keeper element and both pole pieces. The pole pieces 16 are secured to the magnet 14 by a nylon sheath 18 which is a tight sliding fit over the magnet and pole pieces. The sheath 18 has two lugs 20 which seat in recesses 22 in the casing to provide the pivotal movement. Each pole piece 16 has a pair of projections 24 which engage with the sheath to prevent removal of the pole pieces. The strength of the magnet used may be varied by removing the casing and sheath and replacing the magnet with a stronger or weaker one.
