Abstract

1,006,461. Vehicle mirrors. GEBR. HAPPICH G.m.b.H. March 7, 1963 [April 9, 1962], No. 9040/63. Heading B7J. A vehicle rear view mirror, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, comprises a mirror head 1 connectible to a mounting arm (not shown) through a ball joint including a part-spherical seat 3, the head being made from yieldable synthetic plastic foam material covered by a non-porous outer skin 13 of soft synthetic plastic sheet, The mirror glass 7 is held in grooves 5 in arms 4 of a sheet metal holder 2 embedded in the foam plastic which holder includes the seat 3. The glass 7 is also held in a peripheral groove in the head by means of a clamping strip 9 of synthetic plastic and rests with the greater part of its rear surface on a support free 15 of the head. In another embodiment described with reference to Figs. 4 to 7 (not shown) the head is formed with a large cavity provided with a supporting rib to engage the rear of the mirror glass and the metal holder 2, 3, 4 is insertable into the head. According to another embodiment the head is in two parts, one carrying the mirror glass and the other carrying the metal holder, the two parts having engaging chamfered faces and being secured together by a clamping strip. The rear surface of the mirror glass may be covered with a synthetic plastic layer to prevent damage from splintering in event of breakage.
