1,006,234. Rolling beams. YAWATA IRON & STEEL CO. Ltd. May 11, 1962 [May 15, 1961], No. 18233/62. Heading B3M. In a method of rolling wide flanged beams in a universal mill having its vertical and horizontal roll axes copolanar, the vertical rolls are first driven non-positively to a speed substantially the same as the rolling speed. Vertical rolls 11, Fig. 2, may be driven frictionally from the horizontal rolls 7 by rubber portions 10, the flanges 12 of the rolls 7 also being of rubber, if desired. Alternatively, small motordriven friction wheels 13 acting on the roll sides or tops may be employed, or compressed air or water may be directed from jets 12, Fig. 6, into grooves 14 in the rolls 11 in order to rotate the rolls.
