Abstract

A brake device has a resilient partition 3 of the rolling-bellows type bounding or dividing the space 14, 21 for the pressure medium which supports a piston 4 in a wheel-brake cylinder 1, 2. The cylindrical part of the piston 4 is housed, when at rest, inside the part 1 which widens slightly in conical fashion towards the direction of outward movement of the piston and which has a depression at 16 for the pressure medium entering at 15. The piston rod 5 is pivoted to the cam lever 7 actuating brake shoes 20. The entry position of the rod 5 into the cylinder 2 is protected by a pleated bellows 12 perforated at 22 to allow air to enter when the spring 9 returns the piston to its starting position, as in Fig. 1. The effective area of the rolling-type bellows normally remains constant throughout the stroke, but this characteristic can be varied in the present construction by widening or narrowing the cylindrical part of the outer housing 2, as shown dotted at 2<SP>1</SP> or 2<SP>11</SP>.
