Abstract

1288884 Seals SVENSKA KULLAGERFABRIKEN AB 14 Jan 1970 [16 Jan 1969] 1895/70 Heading F2B In a transmission mechanism in which a nut 11, 12, 13 is movable axially over a bar 10, an annular seal 17 of resilient material (e.g. P.T.F.E.) is provided which seals with the nut and which is urged axially away from the nut so that a helical protuberance 18 makes sealing engagement with a side face of the helical groove 14, the torque between the nut and seal being transmitted as by pegs 19. In the ball-nut mechanism shown, nut components 11, 12 are mounted in a sleeve 13 and balls 16 circulate as the nut is displaced along the bar. A flexible flange 21 seals against a washer 22 at the end of the nut and urges the seal 17 axially away from the nut; the flange also serves to release surplus grease in the space 23. A similar seal is provided at the other end of the nut assembly 11, 12, 13. The axial pressure on the seal 17 may be adjusted by altering the angular position of the seal by use of pegs 19 which fit into angularly-spaced bores, the number of which being greater than the number of pegs. Instead of pegs, radiallyextending ridges on one part may engage with grooves in the other. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the annular seal (17) is urged axially by a coil spring (26) and a radial flange (25) co-operates with a tubular extension (27) of the washer (22) at the end of the nut to form a relief valve for surplus grease.
