[Also in Division B3] A resilient member clamps the components of a head assembly in two mutually perpendicular directions. The assemblies may then be encapsulated and finish-ground on tapecontacting surfaces. The assemblies may be aligned in jigs before clamping, but the jig arrangements are not detailed. In one embodiment, a four-petal steel clamp 30, Fig. 5, exerts forces to consolidate the stack of layers forming a screened, two-track tapehead (Figs. 1-4, not shown) and to force the core-members together, the insertion of the assembly into an external screening can 40, Fig. 6, increasing the effective pressures. In a second embodiment (Figs. 7-9, not shown) four separate resilient springs acting through plastics clamping members serve an equivalent purpose to the four petals of Fig. 5. In a third embodiment, Fig. 10, the core laminations are in three parts 53, 54, 60 and a clip 65 acts through plastics members 51, 52 against 45-degree flats 68, 69 on the coremembers to act to close the gap 55 and to clamp the parts 60 to the parts 53, 54 away from the gap 55.
