Abstract
Fig. 1Ballast control optimization during barge unloading includes selecting a container for unloading from a vessel, and determining a ballast maneuver to maintain a defined post vessel level. -withdrawal. The determined ballast maneuver is then executed and subsequently a set of possible next containers for unloading can be identified. For each of the following possible containers, a corresponding ballast maneuver can be determined. Then one of the following possible containers is selected, which is associated with a corresponding least demanding ballast maneuver. Finally, the corresponding least demanding ballast maneuver is performed. In this way, a ballast control is optimized to minimize the necessary ballast maneuvering through the strategic sequencing of unloading containers onto the vessel. Fig. 1
