Abstract
Description
The invention relates to glass articles. It relates more particularly to a method and a device for manufacturing glass articles by centrifugation, as well as the articles thus obtained.
The articles concerned by the invention are mainly, but not exclusively, those intended for the "Tableware", that is, articles of tableware such as plates, bowls, salad bowls and the like. In the field of glass, there are various methods for making an article for the Arts of the Table, the main ones being the following: the so-called "pressed-blown" method, in which a blank is pressed, transferred into a finishing mold, then blown to form hollow articles. Examples of such articles are foot glass parisons, cups, candle containers, and the like. ; the process called "pressed", in which a mass of molten glass, called "drop of glass", is pressed into a mold to form so-called "classic" articles. Examples of such articles are portholes for washing machines, cups, cups, cups, ashtrays, etc. ; the so-called "centrifuged" process, in which a "glass drop" is deposited on a mold, which is rotated to cause centrifugal force to spread the drop, thereby forming articles "Dishes", such as plates, bowls, salad bowls, etc.
The invention relates to the latter method, that is to say the manufacture of glass articles by centrifugation of a drop of glass previously deposited on the bottom of a mold.
It will be recalled here that, in the field of ceramics, there are other forming processes (slip casting, isostatic pressing, etc.), but that these forming processes are not exploitable in the glass industry. Indeed the manufacture of a ceramic article for the Tableware always obeys the following scheme: 1) supply of raw materials, 2) forming, 3) heat treatment (baking / sintering), and 4) natural cooling. On the other hand, in the glass industry, the pattern is exactly the opposite: 1) supply of raw materials, 2) heat treatment (melting), and 3) controlled shaping / cooling (at the same time). Obtaining complex shapes for glass articles therefore poses many more problems than for ceramic articles, since the shaping of the article and its cooling must take place at the same time and are closely related. Once the glass has cooled, it is no longer possible to shape it. The current centrifugation process therefore makes it possible to obtain only articles of simple shapes, such as plates, salad bowls, bowls, etc., which generally have a cylindrical shape of revolution. In addition, the current centrifugation process only makes it possible to obtain articles which have a thinned edge, also called "whistled edge". In fact, during centrifugation, the molten glass drop gradually spreads in the mold and fills it in successive waves to form a spread product, also called "slab", which ends with the aforementioned thinned edge.
The main object of the invention is to improve the centrifuged process to widen the variety of feasible forms and to make it possible to manufacture articles of complex shapes which, until now, could only be obtained by other methods, such as the pressed process, for example.
Another object of the invention is to achieve, by an improved centrifuged process, glass articles of complex shapes by providing a saving of time and material.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide, with this improved centrifuged process, different shapes of articles having thick edges, and no longer thinned edges, and with articles that do not necessarily have a form of revolution.
The invention proposes for this purpose a method of manufacturing a glass article, of the type comprising the following operations: a) providing a mold having a bottom and an upper edge; b) dropping a drop of molten glass on the bottom of the mold; c) driving the mold in rotation about a vertical axis to cause the drop of molten glass to spread on the bottom of the mold by centrifugation and thus to obtain a glass slab corresponding to the shape of the article; and d) demolding the glass article once cooled.
According to the invention, a retaining ring is placed on the upper edge of the mold before operation b) and this retaining ring is driven in rotation through the mold in operation c). this makes it possible to block the rise of the glass by the retaining ring and to obtain a glass article of complex shape.
Thus, in the method of the invention, the drop of molten glass is spread in the mold and the rise of the glass is blocked by the retaining ring, which allows to create a glass accumulation along the retaining ring and form an edge and complex shapes under controlled conditions. It is thus possible to manufacture in particular articles having thick, non-thinned edges, for shapes which are not necessarily of revolution. The process of the invention is therefore fundamentally different from prior centrifuged processes where the molten glass mounted along the mold, under the effect of centrifugation, and stopped naturally, without undergoing any forced blockage, creating a thinned edge . This results in the possibility of forming glass articles of complex shapes with the additional advantage of a gain in productivity and speed due to the use of a centrifuged process. Advantageously, following operation c), the rotation of the mold is stopped, which causes the rotation of the retaining ring to stop, and then the retaining ring is removed from the mold in order to demolding the article. Indeed, since the retaining ring is rotated by the mold, it is preferable that the retaining ring be moved away from the mold once the rotation of the latter has ceased. It is furthermore advantageous that after removal of the retaining ring, the rotating mold is again driven without the retaining ring to cool the article before demolding. Advantageously, the retaining ring is mounted in free rotation on a support movable in vertical translation in the direction of the vertical axis 30 between a close position in which the retaining ring is in contact with the upper edge of the mold and a remote position in which the retaining ring is remote from the upper edge of the mold.
Advantageously, in operation d), the demolding of the glass article is carried out by vertical extraction.
In another aspect, the invention relates to a device for manufacturing a glass article, for carrying out the above method, which comprises: a) a mold having a bottom and an upper edge; b) drop means for dropping a drop of molten glass on the bottom of the mold; c) drive means for driving the mold in rotation about a vertical axis to cause the drop of molten glass to spread on the bottom of the mold by centrifugation and thus to obtain a glass slab corresponding to the shape of the mold; article; and d) demolding means for demolding the glass article once cooled. Finally, the invention further relates to a glass article obtained by the method defined above and / or by the device defined above and / or by the installation 30 defined above.
In the description which follows, given by way of example only, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a device for manufacturing glass articles according to the invention; FIGS. 2A to 2M show different successive phases of operation of the device of FIG. 1; - Figure 3 shows an installation comprising a plurality of devices according to Figure 1 arranged in a carousel; FIG. 4 is a sectional view of a glass article as obtained, the mold and the retaining ring being also shown; and - Figure 5 is a perspective view of a glass article obtained by the method of the invention. Reference is first made to FIG. 1, which shows a device 10 according to the invention intended for the manufacture of glass articles by centrifugation, implementing the method of the invention. The device 10 comprises a mold 12 capable of being rotated about a vertical axis XX. The mold 10 defines a molding cavity in correspondence of the external shape of the article to be produced. It comprises a bottom 14 and an upper edge 16 in the form of a shoulder. This upper edge 16 is of annular shape and is contained in a plane perpendicular to the axis) (X, therefore in a horizontal plane, in the example, the shape of the mold is of revolution about the axis) (X. The edge 16 is here generally circular and is extended by a cylindrical wall 18 forming a shoulder, however other shapes are possible and the edge 16 may have non-circular shapes, for example oval, square, rectangular, polygonal, etc.
The bottom 14 is hollow and traversed at its center by a valve 20 for demolding a molded article by vertical extraction. The mold 12 is carried by a frame 22 and driven in rotation by means of a motor M (shown schematically), for example electric, under controlled rotation conditions. In the position shown in Figure 1, the valve 20 is in the low position and ensures the continuity of the bottom of the mold. The device further comprises drop means shown schematically in the form of a funnel 24 which is fed with molten glass by a reservoir R according to a technique itself known in the field of centrifugation process. Such dropping means of the glass drop are described in the technical literature. The tank R is disposed above the tank and is intended to periodically deliver a mass of glass, also called "drop of glass" under controlled conditions precise and reproducible. It must indeed be always the same amount of glass that is delivered depending on the shape and dimensions of the article to be produced, and also the nature of the glass used and its temperature at the outlet of the tank. This temperature is most often around 1200 ° C. The falling means make it possible to drop the drop of molten glass on the bottom of the mold. Once the drop of glass is deposited on the bottom of the mold, rotating the mold about the axis (X) causes the drop of glass to spread out as is well known in the art. Funnel 24 is intended to calibrate the drop of glass and to make it drop to a central location of the bottom of the mold. This funnel is supported by a support 26 of generally annular shape, called a "telescope", movable vertically, in the direction of the axis) (X, between a low position and a high position, under the action of an actuator 28 such as for example a pneumatic or electric cylinder The jack comprises a body and a rod arranged vertically, the column forming rod In the position of Figure 1, the funnel is shown in the upper position, therefore in the farthest position of the mold 12. According to the invention, the device further comprises a retaining ring 30, also called "Circle", suitable for use n place on the upper edge 16 of the mold to be rotated by the mold and thus block the rise of the glass, as will be seen later. This retaining ring 30 is made of metal and has a lower edge 32 of shouldered shape and adapted to rest on the upper edge 16 of the mold, while being held by the cylindrical wall 18 of the mold, to ensure a perfect centering of the retaining ring with respect to the mold. The retaining ring 30 is mounted in free rotation on a support 34 displaceable in vertical translation in the direction of the vertical axis) (X between a close position in which the retaining ring is in contact with the upper edge of the retaining ring. mold and a remote position in which the retaining ring is spaced from the upper edge of the mold, as shown in Figure 1. The retaining ring is disposed under the support 34, which also has the shape of a ring , which makes it possible to ensure a central passage for the funnel 24. The retaining ring 30 is mounted under the support 34 by means of a ball bearing 36 comprising a thrust bearing or other brake to enable indexing of the position of the ring The device further comprises an actuator 38 for moving the support 34 of the retaining ring 30 from one to the other of its close and remote positions. is advantageously made under the f elm of a pneumatic or electric cylinder. This jack comprises a body and a rod extending vertically, the rod forming a support column.
As can be seen in FIG. 1, the actuators 28 and 38 are arranged next to one another and have actuating lines parallel to each other and parallel to the direction of the axis of rotation) (X The device further comprises cooling means 40 (shown schematically) for cooling the glass article before demolding. This cooling is advantageously provided by nozzles, not shown, for directing a flow of appropriate cooling fluid, especially air under controlled conditions.
Le moule 12 est toujours fixe, et l'entonnoir 24 est toujours maintenu dans sa position haute.2A to 2M are now described to describe the operation of the device of FIG. 1. FIG. 2A shows the device at the beginning of the operating cycle before loading, that is to say before depositing the drop of glass. In this position, the mold is not rotated, the retaining ring 30 is remote from the mold and the funnel 24 is also in the up position. FIG. 2B shows a subsequent phase in which the actuator 38 has moved the support 34 from the remote position to the close position to make the retaining ring 30 come into contact with the mold 12. In this position, the lower edge 32 the retaining ring is fitted into the upper edge 16 of the mold and the cylindrical wall 18 of the mold. The mold 12 is always fixed, and the funnel 24 is always maintained in its high position.
The funnel 24 is thus placed above and close to the retaining ring 34 and crosses the latter. As a result, the funnel is in a position to guide the drop of glass (not shown) to make it fall in the central part of the bottom of the mold.
FIG. 2E shows a subsequent phase in which the funnel 24 is reassembled in position high under the action of the actuator 28. It can be seen that the drop of glass G forms a ball in the bottom of the mold; Fig. 2F shows a subsequent phase in which the drop of glass G has reached the bottom of the mold and the mold is rotated in the direction of arrow F1, here counterclockwise, under controlled speed conditions. Since the retaining ring 30 is in contact with the upper edge 16 of the mold, the rotation of the mold automatically drives the rotation of the retaining ring 30, which is freely rotatably mounted under the support 34. The retaining ring is maintained at an appropriate temperature by contact with the mold. FIG. 2G shows how, under the effect of the rotation of the mold, the drop of glass G is spread out to form a slab forming successive waves which will go up along the mold in the direction of the retaining ring 30. FIG. 2H shows a subsequent phase in which, as the mold is still in rotation, the molten glass comes into contact with the retaining ring 30, which blocks the rise of the glass and makes it possible to create an accumulation of material under the retaining ring. This results in the possibility of forming, for example, an article with a thick edge, which would not be possible without the presence of such a retaining ring. Figure 21 shows the device in a subsequent phase, similar to that of Figure 2H, except that the mold is stopped rotating. This also causes the rotation of the retaining ring to stop. Figure 2J shows a later phase in which the retaining ring 30 has been brought into its remote position by the actuator 38 by upward vertical movement. This produces the article 42 having an edge 44 which has been shaped by the retaining ring and which results from the accumulation of the glass against this retaining ring. FIG. 2K shows a subsequent phase in which cooling of article 42 is effected by cooling means 40, the mold being rotated in the direction of arrow F1 as before. This cooling can be carried out for example by air spraying, in a manner known per se. After cooling, the temperature of the article is generally of the order of 500 ° C, which allows its handling. Figure 2L is similar to Figure 2K except that rotation of the mold has been stopped. Figure 2M shows the last phase of the process in which article 42 is demolded. The demolding is performed under the effect of the valve 20 which is actuated vertically in an upward movement. The valve makes it possible to detach the article from the mold for subsequent evacuation by any appropriate means, for example suction cup means (not shown). The valve then returns to its original position to close the bottom of the mold. Reference is now made to FIG. 3 which shows an installation 46 comprising a set of devices 10 as previously described, arranged in a carousel and moving continuously in a circular path. In the example, these devices 10 are 14 in number and are arranged at equal angular intervals relative to the center (not shown) of the aforementioned circular path) allow continuous manufacture of glass articles between a loading station ( position of Figure 2A) and a demolding station (position of Figure 2M). Figure 4 shows in cross section an article 42 obtainable by the method of the invention. It is seen in the sectional view that the article is molded by the mold 12 and that its edge 44 has been shaped by the retaining ring 30, allowing accumulation of material and thus the realization of a thick edge in the example. Figure 5 shows in perspective an example of such an article. This is an example of an article of generally rectangular shape, and not of generally revolution form. This article can be produced in particular in the form of a dish or a plate. The method of the invention thus makes it possible to create complex shapes, in particular shapes with thick edges, with a centrifugation process, which was not possible in the prior art. Because the manufacturing is done by a centrifugation process, it is carried out more rapidly resulting in a productivity gain. In addition, the result is a lower weight of articles compared to what was possible with conventional pressing methods. It will be noted that, in the invention, it is the mold which drives the retaining ring in rotation and positions it angularly before stopping and rising. Before returning to the remote or raised position, the retaining ring is blocked by a mechanical brake or any other means to prevent the loss of its angular position.
The article is cooled by vertical ventilation, whether the retaining ring is in the up position or in the down position.
The temperature conditioning of the retaining ring is done by adjusting the contact time between the glass of the article and the metal of the retaining ring, on demand. A decompression system of the descent chamber allows a slight rise using a spring to release the ring in contact with the glass.
The mold is conditioned by lateral ventilation with the possibility of spraying water in the air inlet nozzles and by central spraying using a calibrated nozzle.
The invention will now be described with the aid of the following example, given purely by way of illustration. In this example, flat plates of generally square shape are manufactured.
A drop of glass is used at a temperature of 1200 ° C. which is deposited in the bottom of the mold. This is rotated at a speed of 1500 revolutions per minute for a period of 7 seconds; After the rotation has ceased, the retaining ring is raised and the article obtained by rotating the mold is cooled for a period of 6 seconds by rotation at a speed of 300 rpm. This cooling is carried out for example by air spraying towards the article obtained. The parameters indicated in the example above are capable of variation depending on the shape and dimensions of the glass article to be manufactured and also on the type of glass used.
Indeed, the invention applies to the manufacture of articles from different types of glass, in particular of soda-lime, fluorosilicate and borosilicate type and, in general, to all glasses whose viscosity curve is compatible with the process. centrifugal.
The invention is particularly applicable to tableware items, such as tableware, such as plates, bowls, salad bowls and the like. It can also be applied to the manufacture of glass articles for other uses, such as lighting windows, etc.
