Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to the field of attachment of an exhaust manifold to a combustion engine cylinder head, and relates more particularly to the field of attachment of an exhaust manifold to a combustion engine cylinder head, and relates more particularly to the field of attachment of an exhaust manifold to a combustion engine cylinder head. particularly an arrangement of an exhaust manifold on a cylinder head, especially when the exhaust manifold is cast iron.
An exhaust manifold is generally attached to a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine and is intended to collect the exhaust gases leaving different ducts of the cylinder head to transport them, at the outlet of the manifold, in a single duct to equipment such as the turbocharger. The exhaust manifold comprises for example a main duct, one end of which comprises a connecting flange, and a plurality of ducts connected to the main duct and intended to communicate respectively with each exhaust duct of the cylinder head. The ducts are held on the cylinder head by a clamping system formed of a flange intended to be fixed to the cylinder head of the engine by fastening means such as screws, directly screwed into tapped holes of the cylinder head, or by studs , implanted in the cylinder head, and nuts screwed on said studs. The attachment of an exhaust manifold to the cylinder head is usually preceded by a centering step during which the exhaust manifold is centered on the cylinder head via a centering pin. The centering pin is disposed in a positioning housing defined in the cylinder head, preferably disposed in the center of the cylinder head. When mounting exhaust manifold on the cylinder head, the centering pin, usually solid steel, is placed in an associated groove of the exhaust manifold. The flange to be fixed on the cylinder head is generally subjected to a temperature substantially of the order of 200 ° C, while the connecting flange to be fixed on the turbocharger is substantially of the order of 800 ° C. This difference in temperature generates an expansion at the groove in which the centering pin is housed. The groove then tends to close, causing at the same time jamming of the centering pin.
When the exhaust manifold is cast iron, the jamming of the centering pin generates cracks and cracks at the intersection, or junction, the ducts of the exhaust manifold which must then be replaced. In order to overcome this drawback, the object of the invention is to provide an arrangement for mounting an exhaust manifold on an internal combustion engine cylinder head, in which the exhaust manifold, when in cast iron, does not crack and has no cracks at the junctions of the ducts due to thermal expansion of the fastening flanges. For this purpose, the subject of the invention is an arrangement for putting in an assembly position an exhaust manifold with a cylinder head, said manifold comprising a main duct, two adjacent ducts opening into said main duct, said ducts having a junction common, two adjacent fastening flanges adapted to connect the yoke to said conduits, a centering means disposed between said fastening flanges, a centering housing delimited in said yoke adapted to receive said centering means, characterized in that the centering means is capable of being held between said fixing flanges by elastic expansion so that when the collector is subjected to thermal stresses, the centering means catches expansion gaps of said adjacent fastening flanges.
Such an arrangement makes it possible to prevent cracks in the ducts of a cast iron exhaust manifold, and advantageously makes it possible to increase their service life. This arrangement is also simple and inexpensive.
The invention also relates to an internal combustion engine comprising such an arrangement. The invention also relates to a vehicle in which such a combustion engine is mounted.
According to other features, the centering means may be arranged in a plane substantially orthogonal to the plane containing the common junction of said adjacent ducts, the centering means may have a substantially hollow cylindrical shape, and may be substantially split, the means centering may be spring steel, the centering means may be an elastic pin.

The invention also relates to a combustion engine comprising such a device for fixing an exhaust manifold to a cylinder head. The invention also relates to a motor vehicle comprising such a combustion engine or such a fixing device. Other features, objects and advantages of the present invention will appear on reading the detailed description which follows, and with reference to the appended drawings, given by way of non-limiting examples and in which: FIG. in perspective of an exhaust manifold and a cylinder head, - Figure 2 shows a perspective view of the exhaust manifold of Figure 1, Figure 3 shows a second perspective view of the exhaust manifold figures 1 and 2.
In Figure 1, there is shown an arrangement for centering an exhaust manifold 1 on a cylinder head 2 of an internal combustion engine (not shown).
The exhaust manifold 1, as illustrated, is intended to be associated with a four-cylinder in-line cylinder head. The manifold 1 comprises connection pipes of generally rake shape whose teeth are constituted by the inlet ducts 11,12,13,14 substantially aligned exhaust gas.
Each duct 11, 12, 13, 14 of the collector 1 has an outlet end which opens into an outlet main duct 15. As shown in the various figures, the duct 11 and the duct 12 have a common intersection or junction. It is the same for the ducts 12 and 13, and for the ducts 13 and 14. Thus two adjacent ducts have a common junction. It will be understood that this intersection or junction of the ducts is given by way of nonlimiting example, the ducts may comprise a single common intersection 17, or may be associated two by two. The main outlet duct 15 carries an exhaust gas outlet flange 18 connected to an unrepresented exhaust duct, such as the turbocharger.
The inlet ducts 11, 12, 13, 14 of the exhaust manifold 1 are also integral with an inlet flange 3 capable of connecting the ducts to the exhaust face 20 of the cylinder head 2. As shown, the inlet flange 3 comprises a first flange 31 to which are fixed the inlet ducts 11 and 12, and a second flange 32, adjacent the first flange 31, to which are fixed the inlet ducts 13 and 14. A groove central 33 is thus defined in the flange 3 by the first flange 31 and the second flange 32. The central groove 33 is adapted to receive a centering means 4, also adapted to cooperate, during a mounting step of the collector d 1 on the cylinder head 2, with a centering housing 21 delimited in the cylinder head 2. It will be understood that when the exhaust manifold 1 is fitted with the cylinder head 2, the centering means 4 can be indifferently disposed in the central groove 33 between the first fixing flange 31 and the second fastening flange 32, then in the centering recess 21, or in a first step being placed in the centering recess 21 delimited in the yoke 2 and then positioning by guiding in the central groove 33. In the various figures, the combustion engine has an even number of cylinders and the centering housing 21 is advantageously arranged in the center of the cylinder head 2. The positioning of the exhaust manifold with the cylinder head is thus balanced. Thus the centering means 4 is adapted to cooperate with the central groove 33 delimited in the flange 3 and with the centering housing 21 delimited in the yoke 2. The centering means 4 is able to be held between the first fastening flange 31 and the second fixing flange 32 by elastic expansion so that when the collector is subjected to thermal stresses, the centering means 4 catches up the expansion gaps which the two adjacent flanges 31 and 32 undergo. The centering means 4 is arranged in a plane substantially orthogonal to the plane containing the common junction 17 of the adjacent ducts 12 and 13 in order to make up the expansion of the flange of the exhaust manifold. The centering means 4 is disposed in a plane substantially orthogonal to the plane containing the joint junction of two adjacent ducts each belonging to a different flange. The centering means 4 has a substantially hollow cylindrical shape, and is substantially split along its entire length. In the various figures, the centering means 4 is made of spring steel. When the flange 3 expands, the first flange 31 and the second flange 32 come closer, the centering means 4 is deformed while remaining housed in the central groove 33. The centering means 4, unlike a conventional centering pin, does not break and makes it possible to make up the expansion gaps due to the different temperatures experienced by the exhaust manifold 1. The intersection 17 of the ducts 11, 12, 13, 14 does not crack when the central groove 33 tends to shrink . In another embodiment not shown, the engine is a three-cylinder engine. The exhaust manifold mounting flange has three attachment flanges, each inlet duct being attached to its associated attachment flange. The fixing flange thus comprises two central grooves, a first groove being disposed between the first and the second flange, and a second groove being disposed between the second and third flanges. First centering means is located in the first groove and second centering means is disposed in the second groove. The cylinder head, in this embodiment comprises two centering recesses associated with each centering means or each groove. Thus, each groove is disposed in a plane orthogonal to the junction of two adjacent ducts each belonging to a different flange. Such a mounting arrangement of the exhaust manifold 1 with the cylinder head 2 can also be realized by advantageously using an elastic pin as the centering means 4. This arrangement makes it possible in particular to avoid changing the exhaust manifolds. on vehicles due to cracks or cracks at the junctions of the ducts.
