Abstract

Two floats (4) for a sail board (1) are placed on the port and starboard side at the ends of arms (3) to form a trimaran. A single float can be mounted on a pivoting arm. The float comprises an outer side (8) almost vertical relative to the hull and a greatly inclined inner side (7) overhanging the water to encourage possible lateral sliding. A vertical or curved stabilizer (5) is placed under the float.

Description

Lateral float for sailing or kite boat
The object of the present invention is to improve the stability of a windsurfing board to navigate more easily and easily, to otrparter a more stable speed to go faster, or even to use a kite as a sail, which requires sustained attention from the pilot towards the kite and makes it more difficult for him to operate the board. The proposed provisions are applicable to other boats.

According to the present invention, on the side of a hull favoring the separation of the water streams at the rear, a transverse arm carries at the end an elongated float of approximately triangular cross section with the side opposite to the hull close to the vertical and the rounded side of the hull, convex and overhanging the water. Under the float is fixed an oblique drift or "marine wing", overhanging the water on the hull side, in particular a curved wing with the concavity on the hull side. The float and the wing are intended to exert on the water a force downwards and towards the windward side, when they are placed in the wind relative to the hull.

The shape of the float facilitates its planing with sliding on the water when the current of water tends to move it away from the hull. The curved shape of the wing, inspired by other inventions by the same author, tends to provide the stability of a partial emersion as well as the lateral attachment necessary for sailing.

An arm, float and marine wing assembly can be arranged on each side of the hull, forming a trimaran with relatively high floats, which will sail with the only float in the wind touching the water. Two arms can then be used for each float. One can also use a single set, the arm of which can pivot around a vertical axis on the hull, passing through the rear, to return to the windward side of the hull. This assembly is then endowed with a front-rear symmetry to operate in both directions. This "semi-prao" arrangement can reduce the weight and the cost of the device.

- Figure 1.
- Figure 2.
- Figure 3.
The present invention is illustrated by the following Figures:
- Figure 1. Perspective view of the trimaran pulled by a kite,
- Figure 2. Cross section of the hull and a trimaran float,
- Figure 3. Perspective view of the semi-prao fitted with a sail.

Figures 1 and 2 for the trimaran show a hull 1 of a windsurfing board, surmounted by a base 2 adapted to this hull, anchored for example by using the existing drift well. From the base, two transverse arms 3 and 3 'form an upward dihedral, at the ends of which are fixed two floats 4 and 4' elongated parallel to the hull, their keel lines such as 5 being significantly higher than that of the hull, so that only one float touches the water. It is the float in the wind which is intended, under the action of the pilot, to lean on the water either directly or through its wing 6 (drift), and to provide the essential of the resistance lateral to the force of the wind. This windward position of the resistance improves the roll stability, when using a kite or a wing with lift effect as in a traditional windsurfing board.

This float in the wind ensuring resistance and therefore tending to slip on the water in the direction of the wind, it is given a shape which then favors its lifting, adding this lifting effect to that of the aerial parts and the hydroplaning hull. To this end, its side 7 on the hull side is strongly inclined above the water, for example with an average angle of the order of 45, with a bulge which decreases this angle by approaching the keel. The sidewall 8 on the outer side can be practically vertical. During a skid, the water streams thus tend to take off from the outer flank, with a lifting effect and reduction of friction.

Wing 6 must cling to the water without slipping, while also providing lift. We use for this purpose the curved shape already proposed by the same author in other applications the deepest part can be practically vertical but the parts above give more and more lift, which leads to a stabilization of the emersion. The wing profile corresponds to a lift towards the outside: the underside on the hull side is therefore approximately flat and the upper surface is curved. This wing can be raised, partially to adjust its action on the water, or completely to approach the shore, in particular by sliding in an inclined passage 9 piercing the float and arriving under the arm 3. The control of this lifting, not shown , may consist of strands passing over pulleys.

For the trimaran, the two floats and the two wings always go in the forward direction of the hull and may therefore not be symmetrical front-rear; shapes and profiles are optimized accordingly.

However, it is possible to use a single arm-float-wing assembly, according to FIG. 3. This assembly can pivot on an axis 20 placed on the base 2 in the plane of symmetry of the hull, the assembly passing through the rear in its route from side to side. On each side, a stop such as 21, placed on the base, limits the pivot angle forwards.

The rotation is controlled by the pilot who sits on the arm 3 and rotates the hull with his feet Although the kite wires or the sheet of the sail can pull the arm forward, there are locking systems backward rotation, erasable by the pilot with a foot, such as pawls 22 fixed on the base. In the case of this "semiprao", the arm-float-wing assembly must be symmetrical front-rear. The shape of the float, to promote the sliding of the water outwards, is favorable to save a certain balance in roll during the pivoting maneuver.

The boat platforms thus obtained, in trimaran or semi-praos, are particularly suitable for traction by a kite, according to Figure 1. Stability is indeed improved compared to windsurfing and the pilot, seated on the arm 3 in the wind and holding the control handles 11 of the kite, can focus its attention on it. To increase stability, it is good that the kite's wires exert their action on the hull very low. Therefore, guide hooks 12 are provided, low on the hull, here disposed on a rotary spreader 13 to reduce friction. Figures 1 and 3 also show a rudder 14 linked to a spreader 15 within reach of the pilot's foot.

In the case of propulsion by a sail (Figure 3), one can choose any rigging and in particular a classic windsurfing sail, as shown in 20 in the case of semi-prao. The pilot, seated on arm 3, cannot then control the sail directly with the wishbone, in particular for the wind-aft turn. A mast strut 25 is therefore provided forwards and lateral struts 26 and 26 ′ of mast attached elastically to the hull I to limit the lateral movement, these struts each being able to be pulled outwards by the pilot by means of a loop 27 to tilt the sail towards the wind and obtain the usual lifting effect for this rigging. A listening 28 is also held by the pilot.

It is noted that in the case of a conventional rigging which does not oscillate laterally, there is already obtained, by the overall inclination of the sail towards the wind, a certain lifting effect.
