Abstract

The invention relates to covering plastic foams with flock. The structure is applicable to seats in particular, e.g. chairs, sofas, benches, pouffes and cushions, but also mattresses, door panels, loudspeaker units, toys, sport equipment, lamps, tables, upholstery, carpets, etc., and is particularly intended for use on furniture or in cars. It comprises moulded or cut plastic foam padding [quilted upholstery] (1), an intermediate layer (2), and flock forming the outer surface (3). This structure is particularly intended to provide resistance to wear and tear, to enable such articles to be made quickly and more cheaply, to provide a more satisfactory covering for all shapes that are difficult or impossible to cover, and to smooth out any asperities situated on the foam to which the flock is to be applied.

Description

I- DESCRIPTION DE;L'INVENTI0N
I- DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
i0) Field of the invention
The present invention relates to the flocking of plastic foams.

It is a structure that can be used in particular for seats, such as chairs, armchairs, sofas, benches, poufs, cushions, but also, mattresses, door panels, loudspeakers, toys, sporting goods, lamps, tables, upholstery, knurling, etc., and intended in particular for furniture or the automobile.

2e) Description of the state of the prior art
Usually the flocking is done directly on the foam.

It is then fragile. It does not resist friction and tears easily with the foam itself.

For this reason, it cannot be applied in particular to furniture which, traditionally, is covered with a fabric or leather.

Also, this upholsterer work is long and expensive.

Finally, it does not allow easy covering of sculpted surfaces or shapes with undercuts or undercuts.

Finally, the flocking of the foam, molded or cut, gives poor results because of the roughness of the surface.

3) Summary of the invention
The structure described in the present invention overcomes these drawbacks
On the one hand, it provides the assembly with resistance to tearing and abrasion. As an indication, abrasion resistance tests on martindale (BS 5690 standard) carried out in a textile testing laboratory showed a number of cycles before wear of the threads between
there are 000 and 27,000 cycles which is a good result.

On the other hand, it allows, in particular the domestic furniture, office or transport industry, to manufacture such articles quickly and at low cost due to the absence of upholsterer work.

Finally, it dresses in a completely satisfactory and easy way to execute all the shapes that are difficult or impossible to cover: such as sculpted surfaces, shapes with undercuts or undercuts, and this without encountering any crease difficulties.

Finally, it fills the roughness located on the surface of the foam, molded or cut, to flock.

According to a first characteristic, the structure comprises a padding in molded or cut plastic foam (1), an intermediate layer (z), and a flock which constitutes the outer surface (3).

The padding (i), molded or cut, will preferably be made of flexible polyurethane foam with a density of the order of 40 to 60 g / l.

The intermediate layer (2) is preferably obtained by applying a flexible polyurethane elastomer of a hardness of about 60 shore A -. But one could also use dulatx, or an acrylic elastomer, or ~ still -a rigid polyurethane elastomer if the padding is made of rigid foam.

The outer surface (3) consists of a synthetic, natural or mixed flock (3a), preferably polyamide, held by an adhesive (3b).

40) Description du dessin :
Le dessin illustre l'invention.
40) Description of the drawing:
The drawing illustrates the invention.

It represents, in section, the structure according to the invention.

5Q) Detailed description
An embodiment of the structure according to the present invention is shown in the accompanying drawing.

In this embodiment1 the structure comprises a padding in molded or cut plastic foam (X), an intermediate layer (2), and a flock (3).

In a first operating stage, the padding (i) is either molded by foaming the liquid foam resin introduced into the foaming mold, or cut from a block of foam.

Preferably use a polyurethane foam with a density of the order of 40 to 60 scab
After demolding or cutting, an intermediate layer (2) is applied to the upholstery during the second operating stage. This is preferably obtained by applying a flexible polyurethane elafltomer with a hardness of about 60 shore A.

In a third operating stage, the surface of the intermediate layer (2) is covered with flakes made of synthetic, natural or mixed fibers which have a fixed connection with said layer.

For this, on the surface to be flocked, an adhesive (3a) is applied by conventional methods, and the flakes (3b) are engaged in this adhesive layer by electrostatic or pneumatic means.
