Abstract
The present invention relates to an antibacterial composition for oral use effective against dental plaque and tartar. The composition contains a polyphosphate type anti-tartar agent, such as tetra (alkali metal) pyrophosphate, and an antiplaque antibacterial agent compatible therewith. The antiplaque agent is a substantially water-insoluble non-cationic antibacterial agent, such as 2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxy (diphenyl ether) (Triclosan). Efficacy against dental plaque is enhanced by the presence of an antibacterial stimulating agent, such as an anionic polymer, which improves the distribution and retention of said antibacterial agent on the surfaces of the oral cavity. Field of application: Products for oral hygiene.

Accordingly, it would be highly desirable to include antimicrobial agents, already known to reduce plaque, in oral compositions containing anti-scale agents.
