Abstract

Abrasive grinding wheels on which the bond is made of artificial or melted cement and which comprises abrasive grits of 150 microns or less. The process which is the subject of the invention consists in introducing corundum globules having a diameter of 1 to 6 millimetres into the mass before hardening of the bond, the said globules forming at the level of the working surface of the grinding wheel, by reason of its wear, small cavities capable of retaining lubrication fluid, which results in the prevention of abnormal local overheating of the treated material, whereas without their presence the lubricant would be expelled by the continuous compact texture of the bond. The invention can be used for the polishing of rocks, in particular of granite which is sometimes spoiled by "burn marks" caused by the use of conventional grinding wheels.

Description

MEULES ABRASIVES POUR LE POLISSAGE DES ROCHES ET
LEUR PROCEDE DE FABRICATION.
ABRASIVE GRINDERS FOR ROCK POLISHING AND
THEIR MANUFACTURING PROCESS.

In the polishing operation of rocks and especially of granite, certain disadvantages have appeared in the use of grinding wheels made from very fine abrasive grains, less than 150 microns, and produced using the usual binders: resins, magnesium cements, molten cements or artificial cements.

Among other disadvantages, some of them cause excessive local heating of the polished material producing at certain points "shots" which stain the material in depth, affecting its presentation. This particular drawback is especially observed when the polishing wheel used is linked to molten cement or to artificial cement, which however also have advantages which justify their use.

In fact, the performance of agglomerated grinding wheels largely depends on the binder which composes them in relation to the nature and size of the abrasive grains which they contain, these ranging from 1,000 microns to a few tens of microns only and being generally constituted, for the polishing of rocks, by silicon carbide.

However, the qualities sought for a grinding wheel are the efficiency and the service life, which, for a given abrasive material, depend essentially on the binder, which must have a high hardness at the same time as a high adhesive power to ensure a high cohesion of the abrasive grains, and simultaneously an abrasion resistance which must in no case be greater than that of the abrasive itself, so as to allow wear of the binder to ensure constant renewal of the surface of work, otherwise the binder remains on the surface, despite the wear of the abrasive, and the wheel loses its bite.

So that, among the existing grinding wheels, it can be seen that the resin-based binders have an abrasion resistance greater than that of the abrasive, causing the yield of the grinding wheel, the surface of which becomes smoother, to drop.

When the binder is constituted by a magnesian cement, the quality of the grinding wheel depends on the state of hardening of this cement, which is slow.

Before the hardening is completely reached the abrasive grains are not sufficiently sealed, which causes abnormally rapid wear of the grinding wheel. When the maximum hardening is reached, the abrasion resistance of this binder increasing with its hardness, there is the same defect as with the resins, the grinding wheel smoothing and thereby losing its performance.

Molten cements or artificial cements exhibit rapid hardening, at the same time as significant adhesive power, but, unlike the other binders, they always exhibit low resistance to abrasion whatever their state of hardening. Their use would therefore seem better suited for the manufacture of grinding wheels intended for polishing rocks. However, their advantage is only noted for the manufacture of grinding wheels whose abrasive grains are greater than 150 microns.

For abrasive grains smaller than this dimension, it can be seen that the grinding wheels using these binders have the drawback of causing abnormal heating due to the too large compactness obtained in this case, which does not allow rapid evacuation. calories produced, and causes the known phenomenon called "shot" which locally heats the polished material and stains it in depth.

The process which is the subject of the present invention makes it possible to avoid this drawback. For this, in grinding stones comprising very fine abrasives (less than 150 microns) and using molten or artificial cements as binder, it is created in the mass of the agglomerate which constitutes the grinding stone of fine closed but empty cells which, without affect the rigidity of the wheel open on the surface as a result of the abrasion they undergo, thus increasing the contact surface with the lubricant used and causing during the rotation of the wheel a better exchange than does it cause a smooth surface, therefore a better evacuation of calories, at the same time as the absence of continuity thus created on the working surface of the grinding wheel makes it possible to entrain lubrication water at the level of each cell, while the continuity of this surface due to the compactness of the binder causes abnormal heating, the work then being carried out practically dry.

According to one embodiment, these cells are advantageously produced by adding to the agglomerated materials for the manufacture of the grinding wheel a certain amount of globular corundum grains, which, until now, is only used for the manufacture of a refractory material making it possible to obtain a thermal insulator for high temperatures. The use of such a material is indeed advantageous in the context of the manufacture of abrasive wheels of this type by the fact that, by its very abrasive nature, it also participates in the polishing action. the surface globules wear out, therefore the alveoli open, causing the desired voids between the grains of silicon carbide to increase, as has just been said, the heat exchanges with the lubrication water and maintain the presence of this water between the surfaces during work thanks to the lack of continuity created on the surface of the grinding wheel as it wears. And on the other hand, by the very nature of this material which has great rigidity, its introduction into the mass of the chipboard which constitutes the grinding wheel does not modify the overall rigidity of this working member.

It is therefore possible, thanks to this process, to make fine grain grindstones bonded with molten or artificial cement without fear of the abnormal loss of the abrasive due to the great adhesion of the binder to this material, nor fear the smoothing of the grindstone as a result of the low resistance of this binder to abrasion, and finally without fear of dangerous heating of the rock, and in particular of the granite being polished.

By way of example only, it is indicated that a manufacture of a grinding wheel which has the desired characteristics can be obtained with the following composition
- Molten or artificial cement 45%
- Silicon Carbide 20%
- Globular corundum 30%
- 5% graphite in which the most suitable globular corundum is found to be grains with a diameter ranging from 1 to 6 millimeters.

These materials poured into the same container are first mixed dry, then wetted until a semi-firm paste is obtained. This paste is then poured into the appropriate molds and abandoned when the binder sets,
A fine grain wheel is thus obtained which exhibits excellent abrasion qualities, which does not smooth and which presents no risk of overheating of the material which it works. Experience shows that the surface polished with such a grinding wheel reaches five times the surface treated with a grinding wheel comprising the same components, the only exception of corundum corundum. And the working time is considerably reduced. These results are obtained with an amount of abrasive equal to that used in the manufacture of grinding wheels whose binder is resin or magnesian cement.

The proportions in which each product intervenes and which are given above by way of example only are not imperative.

Likewise, the use of globular corundum to create closed cells in the binder mass which can open following their abrasion on the working surface of the grinding wheel is considered to be particularly advantageous since this material constitutes by itself - even an additional abrasive, but, according to another embodiment, any other means making it possible to introduce or form closed cells in the binder without harming the stiffness of the grinding wheel can be used, such as an emulsion of this material before it hardens, without affecting the economy of the invention.

The process which is the subject of the invention can be used for the manufacture of any abrasive wheel, and particularly for the manufacture of wheels intended for the fine polishing of rocks and granites which require the presence of abrasive grains of less than 150 microns, although the use of such a process also presents a real interest for any other type of grinding wheel.
