Abstract

The anti-theft device is fitted to the steering column of the vehicle. In contrast to the currently used immobilising lock, which can be broken, the steering column is decoupled, permitting free rotation of the steering wheel with no inter-connection to the steering mechanism. An electro-mechanical system activates locking studs in passages in the fixed part of the coupling. A mobile part fixed to the steering wheel faces the fixed part and has passages into which the studs project to lock the mechanism, the mobile part of the coupling being mounted on bearings on a tube projecting from the fixed part. The electromechanical system can only be activated when the steering wheel is positioned so that a spring loaded ball is directly above a microswitch and while a contact on the ignition switch is closed.
