Abstract

The steering wheel is formed from hollow, square section steel or aluminium alloy tube bent into a circle and welded to a tube bent to form two spokes at 140 degrees to each other. A hub for fixing to the steering column is welded to the spokes. The frame is covered by a moulded plastics coating. The wheel rim is formed from square section tube, bent to a circle and welded where the ends meet. The spokes are formed from a single piece of tube bent on either side of its central zone. The ends of the spokes are flattened and slotted, and are resistance welded to the rim, providing a weak spot in order that the wheel bends in the event of an accident. A hexagonal boss is welded to the central zone of the rod forming the spokes, and fits over the steering column.
